Moss is not just an appearance problem, and it does not stay a small problem. Here is the sequence, roughly in the order it happens.
It lifts your shingles
Moss creeps under the bottom edge of a shingle and swells as it takes on water. That lifts the edge, and once wind gets under a lifted shingle it works it looser every storm.
It holds water against the roof
A moss mat behaves like a sponge sitting on your roof. The surface underneath never gets a chance to dry out between one rain and the next, which is not what any roofing material is designed for.
It blocks your gutters
Moss breaks up and washes down into the gutters along with the needles. Once they block, water backs up under the roof edge and runs down the fascia instead of away from the house.
It turns freeze-thaw into damage
Water trapped in and under moss expands when it freezes. That prises shingle edges and tile joints further apart every cold snap, so a cosmetic problem quietly becomes a leak.
How the job works
Every property is a bit different, but the shape of the job is the same each time.

We look at the roof first
We check the material, the pitch, how much shade the property gets and where the debris is collecting. That decides the method, because a cedar shake and a metal roof are not the same job.

We protect what is below
Plants get watered down before anything starts, and we take care with where runoff goes. Gardens, ponds and ditches are all downhill of somebody’s roof.

Moss comes off by hand
Plastic scrapers and soft brushes, working down-slope so shingle edges are never lifted. Asphalt shingles are never pressure washed, because that strips the granules that protect them.

We treat what is left and clear up
What cannot be lifted off gets treated so it dies back and weathers away over the following months. Gutters get cleared of the debris that came down, and the moss leaves with us.

Common questions
Will my roof look brand new the day you finish?
No, and anyone who promises that is overselling it. The bulk of the moss comes off on the day, but what is left is treated and then dies back and weathers off gradually over the following months. A roof that has carried heavy moss for years will keep improving well after we have gone.
Why will you not pressure wash my asphalt shingles?
Because it takes years off the roof. Asphalt shingles are protected by a layer of mineral granules, and a pressure washer strips those off along with the moss. The roof looks clean and ages far faster afterwards. Pressure is fine on a driveway and wrong on a roof.
How often does moss need dealing with around here?
It depends almost entirely on shade. A roof under overhanging conifers on a north-facing slope will need attention far more often than an open, south-facing roof in the same town. Once we have seen your property we can tell you what is realistic for it.
Do you work on more than roofs?
Yes. Driveways, walkways, patio slabs and window frames all grow moss and algae in this climate, and all four are services we offer. Driveways and sidewalks are usually the more urgent of those, because moss on a sloped or shaded path is a genuine slip hazard.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, both. Working at height on somebody’s home is not something to do without it, and you are entitled to ask any contractor to confirm it before they start.
